Why Reiki? by Eileen Alexander

The ancient healing art of Usui Reiki has been a daily part of my life since I was first introduced to it. I practice it, offer it to others, teach it and live it as a spiritual path. Reiki is so much more than a simple technique to bring balance to your body, mind, emotions and spirit. It is a path inside, to peace and self-empowerment –to taking charge of your physical and emotional wellbeing.
I am often asked, “why Reiki?” I discovered Reiki a couple of years after my oldest daughter passed away. I was very lost and had developed regular bouts of depression, anxiety and severe panic attacks. Being a member of a 12-step recovery program, I knew drugs were not the answer for me, and I began to search for other ways to regain control of my life, my peace and my sanity.
I stumbled into a Reiki practitioner’s office with the intention of giving it a try and maybe going in for an occasional “tune-up.” The moment I walked in tears began to flow. I felt some hope. I began regular treatments and took Reiki training. I began to use Reiki with meditation and yoga (both of which have also had a profound effect in my life.) My anxiety quickly began to lessen and my outlook on life began to brighten. I had more energy and was able to sleep most nights. I began to heal. Because of the profound effect these practices had on my life, I made the decision to leave the legal field (which I had been a part of for over three decades) to share these practices with others. My vision is to see a Reiki practitioner in every household!
So, why Reiki? Reiki is a safe, gentle practice that balances the whole person. It relieves symptoms and supports general health by releasing stress, bringing a sense of balance and ease, resulting in symptom relief and overall wellbeing.
Reiki is offered at most major hospitals throughout the world as a holistic complement to conventional medicine. Many doctors agree that, while they don’t fully understand how it works, they cannot deny the results they see in their patients who receive Reiki.
Anyone can “learn” Reiki (even children). Many people take Reiki Level 1 training in order to learn self-practice and to offer this simple, gentle healing to their loved ones, bringing more peace into their lives, into their homes, into their communities, and ultimately into the world.
The principles behind Reiki are simple – live in the moment; do your best to let go of anger and worry; be self-aware, focusing your energy into what makes your heart sing; be grateful and be kind. What a beautiful blueprint for life!
Curious about what to expect during a Reiki treatment? You simply lie on a massage table, fully clothed, while the practitioner lightly places his/her hands on or over various areas of your body. Often, people feel a sense of deep relaxation, an almost meditative state, while others feel subtle sensations often in the form of heat or tingling. Some see colors or pictures in their mind’s eye. Some people experience immediate results during or after a treatment, while others experience healing shifts over time. Everyone’s experience is a bit different, as Reiki naturally adapts to each individual’s needs.
